# Why handmade toys make the best gifts

> A handmade plush toy is a gift with a story: one of a kind, made by a person, repairable forever. When to give one and how to pick the right pipyaka.

There is a specific face people make when they unwrap a handmade toy. It is not
the polite gift face. It is the face of someone meeting a small creature that
was made once, by a person, and now belongs to them. If you have a gift to give
and you want that face, this guide is for you.

## What makes a handmade toy different as a gift

**It is one of a kind.** Most pipyakas exist in exactly one copy. The gift
cannot be duplicated, re-bought or compared on price sites. Whatever happens,
nobody else has this cat.

**It comes with a story.** A factory plush comes from a shelf; a handmade toy
comes from somewhere. Ours arrive with a name of their own. The story
does half of the gifting work for you.

**It lasts.** Embroidered faces do not fall off, seams are made to be repaired,
and a maker who is still around can fix things years later. Handmade toys
regularly outlive the childhood they were bought for.

## Occasions that work suspiciously well

- **A birth or a first birthday.** The classic. Pick embroidered faces and
  washable fabric (see our [baby safety guide](/articles/choosing-a-plush-toy-for-a-baby)).
- **Leaving for university, a new city, a new job.** A pocket-sized companion
  reads as "I thought about you", not "I bought you a toy". This is what our

- **Someone in a hard season.** Hospital stays, burnout, grief. A soft object
  with a calm face genuinely helps, and it says what cards cannot.
- **Grown adults who would never buy one for themselves.** The largest and most
  grateful audience. Everyone wants a whale; almost nobody buys themselves a whale.

## How to pick the right one

Match the creature to the person, not to the occasion. The rules of thumb we
see in orders:

- Overthinkers get octopuses and owls.
- Nappers get cats and sheep, the rounder the better.
- The perpetually busy get something pocket-sized they can take along.
- Kids pick with their eyes: bright cap mushroom, striped bee, done.

If it is a gift, say so when you write to us. We will leave out the
price slip and tuck in a small card instead, and you can tell us the recipient's
name for the card.

## The practical part

A gift toy should arrive gift-ready: paper wrapping, no plastic clamshell to
wrestle. Check shipping times honestly (ours: packed in 1 to 3 days, delivered
in 5 to 14) and order a week earlier than feels necessary. Future you always
